What is Transarterial Radioembolisation ?

A minimally invasive medical procedure called transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is used to treat liver tumours, particularly those caused by hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and metastatic liver cancer. It entails the precise injection of microscopic radioactive beads known as microspheres right into the blood arteries that feed the tumour.

In order to access the liver during the surgery, a catheter is placed into the patient's groyne and advanced into the blood vessels. The radioactive microspheres are injected through the catheter and transported to the tumour site by the bloodstream. The microspheres get stuck inside the tumor's tiny blood capillaries, where they release radiation that kills the malignant cells.
