What is IODINE MIBG Therapy?

Iodine MIBG therapy, also known as iodine-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine therapy, is a specialized form of targeted radiation therapy used in the treatment of certain types of cancer, particularly neuroblastoma and pheochromocytoma. It involves the administration of a radioactive form of iodine, known as iodine-131, which is attached to a compound called metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG).

MIBG is structurally similar to norepinephrine, a chemical that is taken up by neuroendocrine tumor cells. By attaching radioactive iodine to MIBG, it creates a targeted radioactive compound that is selectively taken up by the cancer cells. Once the radioactive iodine accumulates in the tumor cells, it emits radiation, damaging the DNA and other cellular structures, thereby killing the cancer cells.
